Luc Zandvliet is former director of the corporate engagement project at the Boston-based CDA Collaborative Learning Projects. The corporate engagement project works with companies that have operations in conflict and post-conflict settings. Through visits to corporate operations, and through discussions with multiple stakeholders, the project helps to provide options that ensure local stakeholders benefit positively, rather than negatively, from the corporate presence as well as identifying possibilities for constructive engagement between companies and local communities, governments and NGOs. Together with Mary Anderson, Mr Zandvliet authored ‘How to Get it Right; Making Company- Community Relations Work’ (May 2009) for corporate executives, documenting best practices with regard to company-community relations in contexts of social and political instability. The book is based on the lessons learned through the Corporate Engagement Project and on Mr Zandvliet experiences visiting over 40 company sites in 18 countries, including PDAC members such a Newmont in Ghana and Guinea, Barrick in Tanzania and Pakistan, Greystar Resources in Colombia, and Inmet in Panama.
