Since 1991, Dr Groom has been heavily involved in international mining industry activities through the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and its predecessor, ICME. This has involved very active roles in the Global Mining Initiative, industry input to the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development, the World Bank’s Extractive Industries Review, the IFC review of its safeguard policies and engagement with the banking sector on the Equator Principles. More recently he was seconded by Anglo American to ICMM as chief operating officer for six months during 2008. Dr Groom joined Anglo American in 1972 and worked on gold and uranium operations in South Africa, and nickel and chromium operations in Zimbabwe.
