Frank Almond trained as a chemical engineer and practised in the steel, process and petrochemical industries. In the 1970s he joined the Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG), now Practical Action, the organisation set up to promote the development and introduction of smaller scale technologies as a more controllable way to manage industrial progress, and was its chief executive for eight years. He then joined the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) as a director of WWF-UK, at a time when traditional species and habitat conservation was being replaced by wider concepts of sustainable resource use and leading to an active engagement with the business sector.
